A rare bronze from an uncertain Punic island mint

ISLANDS OFF SICILY, Uncertain. Circa 2nd century BC. AE (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.74 g, 1 h). 𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤉 ('bšby' in Punic) Crab. Rev. 𐤁𐤐 ('bp' in Punic) Herakles standing right, extending his right hand and holding club in his left. CNP 513a. CNS -, cf. 4 (differing reverse). SNG Copenhagen 477-478. Rare and unusually attractive for this difficult issue. Die break on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.

This issue is sometimes attributed to the small island of Lopadusa (Lampedusa), situated between Malta and Tunisia, but a final conclusion over its origin has not been reached to date.
